Organizations

An organization is who you work with. Every project belongs to exactly one, and everyone in an organization can see every project in it.

You always have one

You never have to create an organization to start. The first time Bookbag sees an account with none, it creates one for you named "<Your first name>'s workspace" — or "My workspace" if it does not know your first name — and files any projects you already had into it.

So a solo user simply never thinks about organizations. They matter the moment a second person is involved.

Where organizations live

Not in Bookbag. Organizations, their members and their roles are held at your Bookbag account (sso.bookbag.ai), shared by every product built on it. The same organization, the same people and the same roles apply in Openbook and Madebook.

Bookbag reads them. It does not store an organization or a membership anywhere of its own.

This has three consequences worth knowing:

• Members are managed at your Bookbag account, not here. There is no invite screen, no members table and no role editor anywhere in Bookbag. Every link labelled People or Manage opens your Bookbag account in a new tab.
• A role change takes effect within about fifteen seconds. Roles are cached briefly for speed.
• If the account service is unreachable, access narrows rather than widens. Bookbag would rather tell you "You do not have access to that project" for a few seconds than let something through it should not.

The organizations page

/organizations, reachable from the sidebar's bottom switcher or the account menu.

Organizations The organizations you belong to. Projects live in one of them.

One card per organization, showing its name, your role (Owner, Admin, Member or Viewer), a Current badge on the one you are working in, and its description — or the fallback "Everyone here shares this organization's projects."

Three controls on each card:

• People — opens that organization's member list at your Bookbag account, in a new tab.
• Work here — switches to it. Reads Working here, disabled, on the current one.
• A small external-link button, tooltipped Manage at Bookbag account.

If you belong to none: No organizations yet / Create your first organization to get started.

Switching organization

Either Work here on the organizations page, or the switcher at the bottom of the sidebar.

Switching changes what the dashboard lists and where new projects are created. It does not move anything. A toast confirms: Working in <name>.

Your choice is remembered per browser. Signing in on a different device starts you on whatever that device last used, or your first organization.

A stale choice is handled quietly: if you are removed from an organization your browser still remembers, Bookbag falls back to the first one you are actually in rather than erroring.

Creating one

New organization, on the organizations page or at the bottom of the sidebar's switcher.

The dialog asks for one thing:

• Name — required. Placeholder: Acme Inc. Submitting it empty gives you Name is required.

Press Create. You become its owner, it becomes your current organization, and a toast reads <name> created with the note Add people to it from your Bookbag account.

That note is the important part: creating the organization is all Bookbag can do. Adding people to it happens at your Bookbag account.

Any other rules — a duplicate name, a length limit — are the account service's, and its message is shown to you verbatim.

Note that anyone can create an organization, including someone who is only a viewer elsewhere. You are always the owner of one you create.

What Bookbag cannot do to an organization

Everything except create one and read it. There is no way from inside Bookbag to:

• invite or remove a member,
• change someone's role,
• rename or delete an organization,
• transfer ownership,
• leave an organization.

Projects and organizations

A project's organization is set when it is created and never changes. There is no "move project to another organization".

If you need a project in a different organization, switch to that organization and build it there.
